Description

Reaching the twentieth cataloged repunched mint mark for the 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-020 marks a milestone in the documentation of Denver's die preparation during the postwar era. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1948-D 1¢ WRPM-020, identifying another working die where the D punch was applied at least twice with detectable displacement between impressions. Working dies at the Denver Mint were produced from working hubs through a multi-step process, but the mint mark was always added separately — punched by hand into the finished working die rather than being part of the hub design. This separation meant that every single working die could potentially exhibit a unique mint mark position or repunching pattern, independent of all other dies made from the same hub. The twentieth variety in the sequence confirms that at least twenty separate obverse dies used for 1948-D cent production exhibited detectable repunching, providing numismatic researchers with a meaningful sample of the die population from that production year. No additional cross-references are published for this variety outside the Wexler system.
