1948-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-017

Description

Classified as a D/D Tilted (Rotated) variety, this 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mintmark shows the secondary D impression at a rotational angle relative to the final position. Obverse die markers include a die crack running north of the ear toward the northeast into the hair curl beneath the first T of TRUST, along with a die gouge in the field at the bottom left of the E of WE. On the reverse, a short northwest-to-southeast die scratch appears on the right lower leg of the N in UNITED, a die scratch runs southeast from the upper inside of the F in OF, and a die gouge sits in the field to the lower right of the D of UNITED. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1948-D 1¢ WRPM-017, the tilted repunch indicates the mintmark punch was applied at a slightly different rotational angle on its second impression, a common occurrence when die sinkers adjusted mintmark placement by hand at the Denver Mint during this period of postwar cent production.
