1948-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-010

Description

Showing a D/D repunch displaced to the north, the 1948-D WRPM-010 Lincoln wheat cent preserves evidence of the mintmark being punched into the working die twice with a slight vertical shift. Obverse die markers include southwest-to-northeast die scratches between the 9 and the mintmark, a die scratch running southwest from the bottom of the 4, and multiple die scratches in the field alongside Lincoln's back to the right of the Y in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die gouge appears to the left of the U in UNITED and another below the O in OF. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID 1948-D 1¢ WRPM-010, this variety has no other known cross-references. Repunched mintmarks from this era arose because individual mintmark letters were hand-punched into each working die at the branch mint, and any imprecision in alignment between successive punches left a visible trace of the earlier position beneath or beside the final impression.
