1948-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-004 provides detailed documentation of secondary mintmark visibility declining across four progressive stages. Die markers UVC-301 / DMR-005: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a strong, complete secondary mintmark at MDS and a horizontal die scratch through T of CENT at MDS; Stage C with a strong, incomplete secondary mintmark at LDS and reverse at LDS; Stage D with a medium, incomplete secondary mintmark at VLDS and reverse at LDS. The progression from strong-complete to strong-incomplete to medium-incomplete documents how die wear first obscured portions of the displaced D before further attenuating the remaining visible impression. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1948-D was struck at Denver during the early post-war years of robust cent production.
