1947-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

A clockwise spread pivoting from approximately the 9:00 position shows on the date and slightly on WE TRUST, cataloged as WDDO-001 (Wexler Variety ID: 1947-S 1¢ WDDO-001) and CONECA 4-O-V-CW. The CW rotation is most visible on the date numerals, where the secondary impression arcs clockwise relative to the primary; the WE TRUST spread is lighter but detectable under magnification. A key diagnostic is the mintmark type: this die carries a Sans Serif S punch — terminals cut flat rather than finished with ball or rounded serifs — allowing separation from dies punched with other S styles at San Francisco. Obverse die markers include numerous scratches running north-northwest to south-southeast above and through the digits 19 in the date, plus a small die gouge above the 7. The reverse carries a strong die scratch running north-northwest from the top-left of the second T in STATES, plus numerous additional die scratches across the reverse field. The density of reverse markers reflects active die use and makes WDDO-001 among the better-documented 1940s wheat cent obverse doubled dies in the Wexler catalog.
