Description

Notable for being a triple-punched mintmark, this 1947-S Lincoln Wheat Cent variety is classified as S/S/S Tilted and Tilted, documenting three distinct impressions of the S mintmark with the first two punches each applied at different tilted angles before the final corrected position. Triple-punched mintmarks are considerably less common than standard double-punched varieties, as they indicate the die sinker made two unsuccessful attempts before achieving the desired placement on the third punch. This variety features a Trumpet Tail mintmark, the distinctive S punch style where the lower tail flares outward in a trumpet-like shape, characteristic of a specific punch tool used at the San Francisco Mint during the late 1940s. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1947-S 1¢ WRPM-025, the S/S/S triple punch provides collectors with a more complex diagnostic than typical RPM varieties, as three overlapping impressions create a denser pattern of secondary outlines around the final mintmark position. The Trumpet Tail punch style combined with the triple application makes WRPM-025 one of the more distinctive RPM varieties in the late 1940s Wheat Cent series. A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the left of the upper G in GOD. Die scratches run mostly N/S above the TY in LIBERTY. Reverse: Die scratches run SSW from the bottom of the L in PLURIBUS. A die scratch runs north from the top right of the E in STATES. Other die scratches can be found throughout the reverse.
