1947-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-022

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team, WRPM-022 of the 1947-S Lincoln wheat cent is classified as an S/S Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark distinguished by a trumpet tail mintmark style. The trumpet tail form, where the lower curve of the S flares outward in a distinctive trumpet shape, is itself a noteworthy mintmark characteristic from the San Francisco Mint during this era. A vertical die scratch to the right of the upper Y in LIBERTY and numerous north-south die scratches to the left and right of the bust mark the obverse. On the reverse, die scratches run southwest-to-northeast below the E in EPU, north from the top left of the N in ONE, and numerous additional north-south scratches appear throughout. The tilted secondary impression combined with the trumpet tail mintmark form makes this variety doubly interesting to repunched mintmark specialists. The extensive die scratching on both sides provides ample confirmation points for attribution.
