1947-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-015

Description

Featuring a trumpet tail mintmark — a distinctive S shape where the lower terminal curves outward in a flared flourish — this fifteenth documented repunched mintmark for the 1947 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent combines RPM diagnostics with mintmark style classification. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1947-S 1¢ WRPM-015, the trumpet tail adds a secondary attribution point beyond the repunching itself. Obverse die markers include die scratches running south from the chin to the top of the 1, north-south die scratches left of the mintmark, an east-west die gouge on the lower bust left of the mintmark, and die gouges under VDB. The reverse carries long die gouges above URIBUS UNUM of E PLURIBUS UNUM, a die scratch on the lower C of CENT, and die scratches inside the E of STATES. The extensive network of markers on both sides makes this variety particularly well-documented for attribution. San Francisco Wheat Cents from the late 1940s were struck in modest quantities compared to Philadelphia and Denver, and the trumpet tail mintmark style is itself a collecting specialty within Lincoln Cent research.
