1947-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Cataloged as RPM-005 (UVC-295, DMR-008), this 1947-S Lincoln wheat cent shows an S/S East repunched mintmark using a Sans Serif style punch designated MMS-007. Four die stages document extended production use. Stage A is unconfirmed at early die state. Stage B shows both sides at mid-die state. Stage C reaches late die state on both sides. Stage D captures very late die state with maximum die wear on obverse and reverse. The sans serif S punch lacks the small finishing strokes of serif-style mintmarks, producing a cleaner letter that can make the secondary impression easier to distinguish. The four-stage progression from early through very late die state indicates this die pair saw prolonged service at the San Francisco Mint. The eastward repunching places the ghost S to the right of the final position. Post-war wheat cent RPMs remain accessible for variety collectors.
