Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-293 and DMR-006, this 1947 San Francisco Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-003 shows an S/S South displacement with an MMS-004 trumpet tail mintmark — a distinctive serif extension curving outward from the base of the S. Three die stages trace progressive deterioration: Stage A in early die state features a strong die scratch running southwest from the mintmark to the vest along with die gouges at the shoulder fold, Stage B at mid die state shows the scratch almost entirely worn away, and Stage C in late die state finds the scratch completely gone. The trumpet tail mintmark style, with its elongated curved serif, narrows the S punch to a specific tool used during this production period. The 1947-S Lincoln Cent was struck during the post-war economic boom at the San Francisco Mint. The three-stage progression from strong scratch through gradual erosion to complete disappearance provides collectors with a visual timeline of die wear, enabling precise staging of individual specimens based on the scratch's presence or absence southwest of the mintmark.
