1947 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009
ErrorDescription
The 1947 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-009 features one of the most distinctive doubled die markers in the series: an extra eyelid visible below Lincoln's normal eyelid. This anatomical doubling — where the hub impression shifted just enough to create a second rendering of a facial feature — produces a diagnostic that is immediately recognizable to trained eyes and memorable even for novice variety collectors. Die markers on the obverse include a die scratch running WSW to ENE between the lower E in WE and the first T in TRUST, while the reverse carries a small die gouge resembling a dot below the top left portion of the T in CENT. Cataloged by the Wexler Team with no other known cross-references, this Philadelphia Mint variety comes from the post-war period when the Mint was returning to normal production levels after the massive output demands of World War II. Extra eyelid varieties are found across multiple Lincoln Cent dates and represent a specific manifestation of Class I or Class II hub doubling where the pivot or rotation point positioned the secondary impression directly below the eye area. The 1947 WDDO-009's combination of an eye-catching diagnostic and clear die markers makes it a rewarding cherry-picking target for Wheat Cent variety collectors.
