1947 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1947P-1DO-002, this 1947 Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits an extra eyelid south of the primary eyelid along with slight doubling on the lower right inside of the ear. The extra eyelid effect, where a secondary lid line appears below Lincoln's eye, is a characteristic manifestation of hub doubling that affected the fine facial detail during die manufacture. This subtle feature requires magnification and proper lighting to confirm, but it provides a definitive attribution point once identified. A die crack on the right side of the lower T in CENT on the reverse serves as a die marker for this variety. Struck in the standard copper-zinc composition (95% copper, 5% zinc) that returned to Lincoln Cents after the wartime shell-case copper period ended in 1946, the 1947 Philadelphia issue had a robust peacetime mintage. WDDO-006's extra eyelid variety represents the type of fine-detail hub doubling that appeals to specialists who appreciate subtle die variety features. The dual attribution through both the Wexler catalog and Coppercoins reference ensures this variety is accessible through multiple identification systems. Die Markers: Obverse: Two die gouges in the field are present well south of T in LIBERTY. Die gouge is present just left of the back of the neck. A very worn concentric die scratch runs above IN GOD WE TRUST. Reverse: A small die gouge shows well south of the F in OF.
