1947 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

Ninth in the Wexler catalog of doubled die reverses for the 1947 Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-009 was attributed by Brian A. Ribar and assigned the designation Wexler Variety ID 1947 WDDR-009. The 1947 Jefferson Nickel holds transitional significance: it was struck during the first full post-war production year following the return to the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy after the 1942-1945 wartime silver composition period. During the war, Jefferson Nickels were struck on a special 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese alloy to conserve nickel for military armor plating, and a large mintmark placed above Monticello's dome identified these wartime issues. By 1947, the Mint had reverted to the pre-war alloy and returned the mintmark to its standard position, making this date the benchmark for normalized post-war production.
