Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar as 1947 WDDR-005, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling showing on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS with the spread increasing from left to right, accompanied by slight doubling on UNUM and the LO of MONTICELLO. The left-to-right increasing spread pattern documents a hub displacement geometry where the offset produced progressively greater separation toward the right side of the reverse inscription layout, concentrating the strongest doubling on the rightmost characters while the leftward elements — such as the beginning of UNITED — show only the onset of visible displacement. The slight doubling on UNUM and LO of MONTICELLO extends the affected zone beyond the peripheral inscriptions into the building's name itself, though at reduced intensity. Obverse die markers include a heavy die gouge extending from the upper right portion of the B of LIBERTY through the upper left portion of the E of LIBERTY to the rim — a substantial linear defect spanning two adjacent letters — while reverse markers show a die dot between the upper portions of the second L and O of MONTICELLO and a short die gouge extending from the lower right portion of the O of OF. The heavy B-to-E die gouge on the obverse provides a particularly strong attribution marker that can be identified quickly during roll searching. Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson Nickel with the Monticello reverse, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1947 in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The 1947 Philadelphia mintage of approximately 95.0 million pieces was substantial, though the WDDR-005 designation — fifth in the catalog sequence — suggests this is among the earlier-documented doubled die reverses for the date, commanding attention from collectors building comprehensive Jefferson Nickel variety sets.
