1947 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, WDDR-002 on the 1947 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits very close Class II (distorted hub) doubling on UNUM — a subtle variety that demands careful examination under magnification to confirm. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, with its architectural details and the E PLURIBUS UNUM motto arched above, makes the UNUM letters a particularly diagnostic area for detecting this type of close-spread distorted hub doubling. Obverse die markers include three die scratches between the B and E of LIBERTY and a die scratch below the 9 of the date. The reverse carries a long slanted die scratch above and between the E of FIVE and the C of CENTS, plus an additional die scratch through the T of CENTS. These secondary markers collectively provide a reliable framework for confirming the die pair identity independent of the doubling itself. The 1947 date represents the immediate postwar era, when nickel production had resumed its standard 75% copper / 25% nickel alloy after the wartime silver composition experiment. Philadelphia struck approximately 95 million nickels in 1947. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1947 WDDR-002, this variety rewards patient examination of the UNUM letters under controlled lighting and consistent magnification to observe the close distorted hub doubling characteristics.
