1947 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007
ErrorDescription
Class II distorted hub doubling affects E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on this 1947 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID 1947 WDDR-007. Class II doubling occurs when the working hub is slightly distorted — warped or flexed — during the hubbing process, causing design elements to shift asymmetrically between impressions. Unlike Class I pivot doubling, which produces a uniform rotational spread, Class II creates an irregular pattern where the spread direction and magnitude vary across different areas of the die. The reverse die markers provide critical confirmation diagnostics: X-shaped die scratches below the C of MONTICELLO, a die scratch running from the D of UNITED to the E of FIVE, and a die gouge below the N of UNUM. The 1947 Jefferson Nickel was struck during the post-war economic boom, two years after the wartime silver alloy composition was discontinued and the standard copper-nickel alloy restored. Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse, which had been in production since the series debuted in 1938, features the detailed architectural facade of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate — a design whose fine horizontal and vertical elements make hub distortion doubling particularly visible to the trained eye.
