1947 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Carrying the primary DDR designation for the 1947 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel, DDR-001 displays a light spread pattern that increases in intensity from left to right across E PLURIBUS UNUM, continues onto AMERICA, and appears very light on CENTS and the ELLO portion of MONTICELLO. This progressive left-to-right intensification is the hallmark of a rotational hub doubling where the pivot point lies near the die's left edge, causing design elements on the right side to sweep through a greater arc of displacement. Philadelphia produced approximately 95.0 million nickels in 1947, resuming standard 75% copper / 25% nickel composition after the wartime silver alloy years. VarietyVista documents this under UVC-834 with die marriage reference DMR-002. The spread pattern hierarchy — strongest on PLURIBUS UNUM, moderate on AMERICA, and very light on CENTS and ELLO — provides a natural diagnostic sequence for attribution, with collectors working from the most prominent doubling to the subtlest. Felix Schlag's Monticello rendering shows the building name in a relatively small font size across the base of the reverse, making the very light doubling on ELLO challenging to detect and best suited as a confirming observation rather than a primary identification feature. As DDR-001, this variety holds the benchmark position for 1947 reverse doubled dies, indicating it was either the first discovered or the most significant among the cataloged examples for this date.
