Description

Bearing the primary doubled die obverse designation for the 1946 San Francisco Walking Liberty half dollar, WDDO-001 exhibits a close Class II spread directed toward the center. The doubling appears on the sun rays, the left lower gown, and IN of IN GOD WE TRUST, with tripling visible on the far left lower gown adding an extra layer of complexity to the hub impression. An east-to-west die scratch below the right side breast serves as the key obverse die marker. The reverse paired with this obverse is itself a doubled die, listed as 1946-S 50¢ WDDR-002, showing a close spread on the plumage above both claws of the eagle, the lower pine needles closest to the eagle, and the F of HALF. Additionally, this reverse carries a repunched mintmark cataloged as 1946-S 50¢ WRPM-001, showing an S/S displaced to the north, with light die scratches running north above the eagle's head. This triple-attribution die pair, combining a doubled obverse, doubled reverse, and repunched mintmark, makes WDDO-001 an exceptional find for Walking Liberty specialists. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1946-S 50¢ WDDO-001.
