1946-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008

Description

From the first year of Roosevelt Dime production, this San Francisco issue is cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-008 with reference codes UVC-104 and DMR-012. The obverse shows light spread on the date and designer's initials from top to bottom. The obverse die variety is ODV-001, and the reverse carries mint mark style MMS-001, known as the "Trumpet tail" S, a distinctive mint mark shape where the S features a characteristic curled tail. Die stage analysis identifies Stage A as early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die state with a die clash visible on the bridge of the nose and die scratches running north to south on the obverse while the reverse is also at mid-die state, and Stage C as late die state (unconfirmed).
