1946-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Struck during the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime series, this third cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1946 San Francisco Mint issue shows light spread on the date and on designer John R. Sinnock's initials JS, with the spread running top to bottom through the initials. The 1946 Roosevelt Dime replaced the Mercury (Winged Liberty Head) design, making any die variety from this first-year issue historically significant to series collectors. Cataloged by VarietyVista under die marker codes UVC-099 and DMR-007, the variety tracks across four die states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing die scratches through the Y of LIBERTY at mid-die-state with the reverse also at mid-die-state, Stage C where the obverse die scratches have become weak at late-to-mid die state with the reverse matching, and Stage D where the die scratches are entirely gone at late die state with the reverse at late die state. The obverse is classified as ODV-001, and the reverse carries the MMS-002 Ball serif mint mark style. Collectors should examine the date and Sinnock's JS initials for the doubled images.
