1946 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

Among the earliest post-war Washington Quarters to exhibit hub doubling, the 1946 DDR-005 displays medium extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the heraldic stems on the reverse. Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-0922 and DMR-022, this 90% silver quarter was struck at Philadelphia during the first full year of peacetime coinage production. Die stage analysis reveals three documented states: Stage A remains unconfirmed at early die state, Stage B at mid-die state shows a die scratch running south from the U of UNITED along with minor counterclockwise doubling on RTY of LIBERTY, and Stage C at late die state is unconfirmed. John Flanagan's heraldic eagle reverse, in continuous production since the series debut in 1932, provided ample lettering and design elements where hub doubling could manifest visibly.
