1946 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

The 1946 Washington Quarter DDR-001 is among the most comprehensively documented varieties in the early silver Washington Quarter series, catalogued by VarietyVista with die codes UVC-0580 and DMR-012. Struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver, the variety shows a light spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The obverse is separately catalogued as DDO-003 — a die marriage where both sides carry independent doubled die attributions. Five die stages are documented. Stage A is an early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B at mid-die state shows both sides advancing. Stage C at late-mid die state brings three simultaneous die cracks: down the eagle's right wing, across Washington's upper hair, and across the bust. Stage D at late die state sees the wing crack reach the Q of QUARTER and the bust crack extend into the queue. Stage E at very late die state shows the reverse severely deteriorated, with the bust crack spreading into the field both in front of and behind Washington's portrait. Stage E examples document the final phase of this die's life and represent some of the most dramatic sustained die failure evidence in the Washington Quarter variety series.
