1946 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010
Error
Description
The Roosevelt Dime debuted in 1946, replacing the Mercury Dime and honoring Franklin D. Roosevelt who had died the previous year. The first-year 1946 Philadelphia issue in 90% silver is therefore historically significant as the inaugural Roosevelt Dime strike, making variety attributions from this debut year particularly noteworthy for series collectors. WDDO-010 is a Class V Clockwise spread, pivoting at approximately 3:00 on LIBERTY, producing doubling on the date, the designer's initials, and the IN GOD WE TRUST motto — the latter showing dual-hubbing evidence of tripling or quadrupling consistent with a doubled working hub. The variety is designated Type I and was previously cataloged as WDDO-037 before being reassigned following the discovery that the obverse doubling originated from a doubled working hub. Obverse die markers include a die scratch to the north from the nose, a scratch south from the bust northwest of the J initials, northeast/southwest scratches between B and E of LIBERTY with a heavy north/south gouge in that area, and a northeast/southwest reverse scratch across the lower E of STATES. The Wexler Team attributes this variety.
