Description

Cataloged as obverse die variety ODV-001 and tracked by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-025 and DMR-025, this twenty-third documented doubled die obverse for the 1946 Roosevelt Dime displays medium spread on LIBERTY, Washington's brow, IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials (top to bottom), and the date. The Stage A die state is identified by a small die gouge on the upper neckline, a die gouge on the jaw line, and an angled die scratch between the upper DI of DIME on the reverse — all early die state markers. Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) remain unconfirmed. The 1946 Roosevelt Dime holds singular importance as the inaugural year of the John R. Sinnock design, introduced to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in April 1945. The series debuted on January 30, 1946 — what would have been Roosevelt's sixty-fourth birthday — and the Philadelphia Mint struck over 255 million pieces in that first year. Twenty-three documented DDO varieties for the debut year reflects the enormous production volume and the intense scrutiny that first-year-of-issue coins receive from variety researchers. The medium spread across multiple design elements — portrait, text, and date — indicates a substantial hub shift between impressions during the die-making process.
