1946 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-018
Error
Description
Strong spread on the date, designer's initials (reading top to bottom), IN GOD WE TRUST, neckline, and back of the head makes this eighteenth doubled die obverse for the 1946 Roosevelt Dime one of the more comprehensively doubled varieties in the series. The inaugural year of John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime design — introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945 — generated substantial collector interest from the outset, and varieties from this debut date are particularly sought. Cataloged by VarietyVista with markers UVC-020, DMR-020, the die stage profile is distinctive: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C showing late die state confirmation with a light die crack from the head to the rim at the K-12 position and another from the bust point to the rim at K-6, with the reverse also at late die state. The comment "Obverse is ODV-001" links this to the first obverse die variety documented for the date. The breadth of the doubling — affecting six distinct design areas — indicates a significant hub misalignment that produced visible effects across the entire portrait side of the coin. Eighteen documented obverse doubled dies for the 1946 Roosevelt Dime debut year reflects decades of intensive study by variety specialists. Roosevelt's portrait, with its distinctive nose profile and strong jawline, makes doubling on the neckline and back of the head readily visible diagnostic features.
