1946 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

As a variety from the inaugural year of the Roosevelt Dime, the 1946 DDO-002 holds special significance — John R. Sinnock's design was released in January 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had died the previous April. DDO-002 displays light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the designer's initials (side by side), and the date. Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-004 with die marriage DMR-004, the obverse is ODV-001. Stage C at late die state reveals a strong die clash on the bridge of Roosevelt's nose with the reverse also at LDS, while earlier states remain unconfirmed. The die clash in late die state adds a secondary collecting dimension — specimens showing both the doubled die characteristics and the clash marks command additional interest. First-year varieties of any denomination are sought by collectors documenting the earliest die production for a new design, making the 1946 Roosevelt Dime DDO-002 a noteworthy inaugural-year variety.
