1946 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
As the first cataloged doubled die obverse for the inaugural year of the Roosevelt dime series, the 1946 DDO-001 holds a special place in the denomination's variety census. Medium spread is visible on the date, designer's initials (JS for John R. Sinnock), the neckline running from front to back of Roosevelt's head, and IN GOD WE TRUST — a broad pattern spanning both the portrait and surrounding text. This die carries the Obverse Design Variety 001 (ODV-001) designation, identifying it as bearing the earliest obverse hub design. Cataloged under UVC-003 / DMR-003 by VarietyVista, the remarkably low UVC number reflects early cataloging priority. Die stage B provides key attribution markers: the obverse reaches Mid Die State with a die scratch running southwest from the lower E of STATES, and a light die clash is visible through PLU of PLURIBUS. Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed) and Stage C is Late Die State (unconfirmed). The die clash at Stage B indicates the obverse and reverse dies contacted each other without a planchet during production, leaving a ghost impression of reverse elements on the obverse surface.
