Description

Exhibiting very strong spread and extra thickness on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST with light extra thickness on LIBERTY, DDO-005 ranks among the more visually dramatic doubled die obverses for the 1946 Lincoln Wheat Cent. Die markers are exceptionally detailed: UVC-1714, DMR-006. Stage A shows a strong die scratch running northeast from the 6 of the date in Early Die State, with the reverse paired as DDR-006 also in EDS — a significant pairing that means this obverse die was married to a doubled reverse die, creating a coin with doubled imagery on both sides. Stage B transitions to Mid-Die State (MDS), unconfirmed. Stage C shows both obverse and reverse in Late Die State (LDS). The double-doubled pairing with DDR-006 makes specimens from this die marriage especially desirable to variety collectors, as both sides of the coin carry genuine hub doubling. The year 1946 marked the first full year of post-World War II cent production, when the Philadelphia Mint returned to peacetime output levels with standard bronze composition. Cataloged by VarietyVista, the strong spread on the date numerals and motto makes DDO-005 identifiable under relatively low magnification — a trait that enhances its appeal for collectors who prefer varieties visible without specialized equipment.
