1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012
ErrorDescription
The significance of high Wexler DDO numbers for a given date reflects the depth of attributor examination rather than any inherent hierarchy of importance among varieties. WDDO-001 is not necessarily more dramatic or more valuable than WDDO-012; the numbering simply records the sequence in which varieties were cataloged and confirmed. For the 1946-D cent, twelve doubled die obverses indicate that attributors have scrutinized a substantial sample of the date's survivors and found a dozen distinct working dies bearing hub doubling. Denver's postwar production of 315,690,000 cents generated enormous die throughput, and the transition from wartime shell case alloy back to standard bronze may have introduced unfamiliar variables into the die preparation process. Collectors examining 1946-D cents for DDO varieties should use angled lighting and at least moderate magnification, focusing on the inscriptions and portrait details that are most sensitive to hub displacement. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1946-D 1¢ WDDO-012.
