1946-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008
ErrorDescription
Twenty doubled die obverses cataloged across the full 1946-D production run attest to the scale of Denver's die manufacturing operation that year. Each working die used to strike Lincoln Cents was sunk from a master hub through a multi-step process involving master die, working hub, and finally working die stages — and misalignment could theoretically occur at any transfer point. WDDO-008 documents the eighth such obverse variety for the 1946-D cent, the first year of postwar bronze production at Denver. The coin's obverse carries all the familiar elements of Brenner's design that have remained essentially unchanged since 1909: Lincoln's contemplative right-facing portrait, the word LIBERTY rendered in a classical serif typeface, and the national motto arranged in an arc above. These enduring design elements, reproduced across billions of coins over more than a century, provide the visual framework within which variety collectors detect and classify hub doubling. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1946-D 1¢ WDDO-008.
