1946-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Medium westward spread across Monticello's architectural details, FIVE CENTS, and the right side of the building, accompanied by lighter spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, makes this 1946-D Jefferson Nickel DDR-002 one of the more broadly affected doubled die reverses in the post-war nickel series. Die markers UVC-824 and DMR-011 provide precise attribution coordinates within the VarietyVista classification system. The 1946-D represents the first full year of peacetime Jefferson Nickel production after the wartime silver alloy interlude (mid-1942 through 1945), when nickels were struck in 35% silver with a large mintmark above Monticello's dome to distinguish them. The return to standard copper-nickel composition and the resumption of the small D mintmark in its normal reverse position marked a transition back to pre-war normalcy. The medium westward spread is most prominent on MONTICELLO and FIVE CENTS, where the displacement creates visible doubling of Felix Schlag's detailed architectural rendering of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Schlag's competition-winning Monticello reverse underwent Mint modifications before production, and the building's columned portico provides particularly clear canvas for observing directional spread. Struck on 75% copper, 25% nickel at 21.2mm. Examine MONTICELLO and FIVE CENTS for the westward doubling, with lighter displacement across the surrounding inscriptions.
