Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-0583 and DMR-015, this 1945 San Francisco Washington silver quarter carries an S/S repunched mintmark with the initial punch offset to the west. The reverse is also designated MMS-002, exhibiting the Trumpet Tail feature. Three die states document the die's progression. Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B at mid die state reveals a strong die scratch running northeast through DO of DOLLAR and a die crack across the upper hair. By Stage C in late die state, the reverse has reached LDS and the die crack across the upper hair extends onto the forehead. Washington quarters from 1945 were struck in 90% silver, and the San Francisco facility hand-punched the S mintmark into each working die, creating opportunities for misaligned secondary impressions. The combination of the S/S West repunching with the Trumpet Tail reverse links this variety to the broader MMS-002 die family, and the strong die scratch through DOLLAR at mid die state provides a reliable confirming diagnostic alongside the mintmark displacement.
