Description

Lincoln Wheat Cent variety collecting encompasses one of the broadest and most actively documented segments of American numismatics, with attributors cataloging thousands of doubled dies, repunched mintmarks, and other die varieties across the series' fifty-year run from 1909 to 1958. The mid-1940s dates occupy a productive niche within this landscape — wartime and immediate postwar production generated large numbers of working dies, increasing the statistical likelihood of hub misalignment. WDDO-009 from the 1945-S issue extends the catalog of doubled die obverses for San Francisco's last major wartime cent production. Struck on shell case alloy planchets derived from recycled military brass, the 1945-S cent represents both the practical demands of wartime coinage and the collecting opportunities those demands inadvertently created.
