1945-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007
Error
Description
Hub doubling on Lincoln Cents is created during die manufacture, not during the striking of coins. When a master hub is pressed into a working die blank to transfer the design, multiple impressions are typically required due to the hardness of the steel involved. If the hub or die shifts position between impressions — even by fractions of a millimeter — the resulting die carries two overlapping versions of the design. Every coin struck from that die then shows the same doubling in the same location, which is the hallmark that distinguishes true hub doubling from strike-related anomalies. WDDO-007 from the 1945-S issue records the seventh doubled die obverse in the Wexler catalog for this San Francisco wartime date. The coin was struck on shell case alloy during the closing months of World War II, a period when wartime production urgency may have contributed to the frequency of die manufacturing variations across all Mint facilities. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1945-S 1¢ WDDO-007.
