1945-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
Error
Description
The wheat ear reverse designed by Brenner — featuring ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA flanked by two stylized wheat stalks with E PLURIBUS UNUM arcing above — served the Lincoln Cent from 1909 through 1958, creating a half-century of collecting opportunities that variety specialists continue to explore. On the obverse, where doubled die varieties are detected, Lincoln's right-facing portrait provides the design complexity necessary for identifying secondary hub impressions. WDDO-005 is the fifth such variety cataloged for the 1945-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, struck at San Francisco during the last year of shell case alloy production. With 181,770,000 cents produced, San Francisco's 1945 output required a substantial number of working dies, and the probability of hub misalignment across that die population yielded multiple documented varieties. Collectors pursuing 1945-S DDO varieties benefit from the issue's relative affordability in circulated grades, making it accessible for variety searching. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1945-S 1¢ WDDO-005.
