Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-1671 and DMR-012, the eleventh doubled die obverse for the 1945 Lincoln Wheat Cent displays medium extra thickness on the date and LIBERTY with light extra thickness on WE TRUST. The descending intensity — medium on date and LIBERTY versus light on WE TRUST — maps the hub displacement gradient across the obverse die face, indicating the misalignment vector produced its strongest effect in the left-center field where the date and LIBERTY reside, with diminishing displacement toward the lower right where WE TRUST appears. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is Early Die State, unconfirmed. Stage B is Mid Die State, also unconfirmed. Stage C reaches Late Die State, marked by a die gouge developing on the bridge of Lincoln's nose with the reverse also in LDS condition — this nose gouge serves as the primary identifier for late-stage specimens. The 1945 Lincoln cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze alloy (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm diameter during the final months of World War II. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait of Abraham Lincoln, with its fine detail in the hair, beard, coat lapel, and bowtie, provides the diagnostic canvas where the medium extra thickness is most visible under 5x to 10x magnification. The unconfirmed status of Stages A and B indicates opportunities for collectors to contribute new die state documentation.
