1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008

Description

Presenting medium extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and WE TRUST, this 1945 Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-008 is cataloged with die markers UVC-1668 and DMR-009. The die progression spans three stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C with both obverse and reverse confirmed in late die state. The medium classification of the extra thickness places this variety at a moderate visibility level — detectable under standard magnification but not immediately obvious to the unaided eye. The 1945 issue was the final year of the shell case composition (95% copper, 5% zinc) that had been used since 1944 from recycled military brass. Philadelphia Mint production remained high in 1945, and the transition back to the standard 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc alloy would come in 1946. Doubled die collectors examining 1945 Wheat Cents should note that the medium extra thickness on WE TRUST — rather than the full IN GOD WE TRUST — indicates the doubling may be more readily apparent on certain letters of the motto.
