1945 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019

Description

Listed in the Wexler catalog as 1945 1¢ WDDO-019, this doubled die obverse was produced alongside more than a billion other Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat cents bearing the same date. The composition — 95% copper and 5% zinc, derived from recycled brass shell casings — stands as a physical reminder of the material sacrifices demanded by World War II. Tin, a component of pre-war bronze, was deemed too critical for military applications to be used in coinage, and the shell-case alternative served from 1944 through 1946. Hub doubling provides a window into the die-making process of the 1940s.
