1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-014

Description

A second doubled die obverse for the 1945 Lincoln Wheat Cent, DDO-014 also shows medium extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and WE TRUST but is distinguished from DDO-008 by its unique die markers: UVC-2573 and DMR-031. Three die stages document the die's service: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die state; and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed mid-die state at Stage B provides the most commonly encountered condition, where the doubling remains clearly visible while the die shows moderate wear characteristics. Although DDO-014 and DDO-008 share the same affected inscription areas, each represents a distinct working die with its own unique markers and die state progression — collectors must rely on the specific UVC and DMR codes along with die-state diagnostics to differentiate the two. The existence of multiple DDO varieties for a single date reflects the large number of working dies consumed at the Philadelphia Mint during wartime production.
