Description
From the final year of the Mercury Dime series, RPM-008 for the 1945-D shows a D/D with the first punch offset to the northwest of the final mintmark position. The northwest displacement places the original D above and to the left of the corrective strike, creating overlapping outlines in the upper-left quadrant. The 1945 date carries special significance as the last year Adolph Weinman's Winged Liberty design appeared on the dime — the Roosevelt Dime replaced it in 1946, making 1945 varieties terminal entries in the Mercury Dime RPM catalog. Denver Mint production remained at wartime levels, and the volume of dies consumed during this final year generated the mintmark variations collectors now seek. Each RPM on a 1945-D represents one of the last working dies to receive a hand-punched D for this series. Struck on 90% silver planchets.
