1945-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

The 1945-D WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse variety on the Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, part of the long-running series designed by Victor David Brenner that began in 1909. Slight doubling appears on the date, most readily observed on the horizontal crossbar of the 4, where the secondary hub impression left a faint but detectable offset from the primary numeral. Magnification is recommended for confident attribution. While the obverse shows no significant additional die markers, the reverse carries a repunched mintmark cataloged in the Wexler RPM Files as 1945-D 1c WRPM-003, displaying a D/D Northeast. The coexistence of a doubled die obverse and repunched mintmark reverse within the same die marriage creates a dual-variety coin, offering collectors two distinct die anomalies on a single piece. The 1945-D Lincoln Cent was struck during the final year of World War II, by which time the Mint had returned to standard bronze composition after the emergency zinc-coated steel planchets of 1943. Denver produced cents in substantial volume during this period, resulting in a large surviving population for cherrypicking.
