1945-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011

Description

Struck during the final year of World War II at the Denver Mint, this eleventh documented doubled die obverse for the 1945-D Lincoln Wheat Cent displays medium spread on WE TRUST — more readily visible than the light doubling found on many DDOs in the series. The 1945-D was produced in brass shell case alloy (95% copper, 5% zinc) adopted during wartime, the last year this composition would be used before standard bronze returned in 1946. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-2925 with die marker reference DMR-030, three die states document the die's working life from early through late production. Eleven DDOs for 1945-D reflects the enormous wartime output from Denver, where the Mint produced cents at high volume to support both military and civilian commerce. The medium spread on WE TRUST places this variety in the middle range of visibility — more detectable than light-spread varieties but less dramatic than the strongest DDOs. Denver's wartime cent production consumed many die pairs, and hub misalignment during die preparation made doubled dies an inevitable byproduct of large-scale production.
