Description

The 1945-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-023 is a doubled die variety on the Lincoln Wheat Cent, most readily identified by an extra eyelid visible southeast of Lincoln's normal eyelid — a distinctive doubling feature popular among cherrypickers. The displaced secondary eyelid creates the appearance of a second, slightly lower lid beneath the primary one, a pattern experienced collectors can spot under moderate magnification. Obverse die markers add further diagnostic certainty: the D mintmark is punched noticeably high near the 9 in the date and slightly rotated from normal orientation. Additionally, two die gouges appear on Lincoln's nose below the extra eyelid area, providing a cluster of identifying features in one small area of the portrait. Reverse die markers include a die gouge northeast of the second S in STATES and a die crack running down the right side of the T in CENT, offering reverse-side confirmation of the die pairing.
