1945-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011

Description

This 1945-D Jefferson nickel doubled die obverse, attributed as Wexler Variety ID: 1945-D WDDO-011 and cross-referenced as CONECA DDO-007, exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling visible on IN GOD WE TRUST. Class II doubling results from the hub rotating slightly during die impression, distorting rather than simply spreading the design elements. Struck at Denver on the wartime silver alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, this coin belongs to the final year of the emergency composition adopted in 1942 to conserve nickel for military use. The large D mintmark above Monticello's dome — a placement unique to wartime silver issues — distinguishes these coins from standard Jefferson nickels. In 1946, the Mint returned to 75% copper, 25% nickel. This variety also carries a minor D/D repunched mintmark shifted west, making it a dual-attribution coin of particular interest. Die markers confirm identification: an obverse die dent below the right side of the O in GOD, X-shaped die scratches below the star, scratches through FIVE on the reverse, and a die scratch below the first T and A of STATES.
