1945-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as CONECA DDO-001/RPM#12 D/D East, this 1945-D Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse is cataloged as 1945-D WDDO-009 under the Wexler system. Classified as Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling, this variety shows close doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST. The 1945-D Jefferson Nickel is one of the wartime "silver" nickels struck in the emergency 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese composition used from mid-1942 through 1945 to conserve nickel for military applications. These wartime issues weigh 5.00 grams at 21.2 mm diameter and are identifiable by the large mintmark placed above Monticello's dome. Obverse die markers include two slanted die scratches in the fold between the back of Jefferson's collar and the queue (ponytail). On the reverse, this die is also listed as WRPM-033 D/D East — a repunched mintmark with the D punched over a D displaced to the east — making this a combination DDO/RPM variety. Additional reverse markers include die scratches through and below the N of CENTS, a die scratch on the left side of the dome, and a die scratch to the upper left of the F of FIVE. The CONECA DDO-001/RPM#12 cross-reference confirms recognition of this dual-error combination by both major attribution organizations.
