1945-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

A wartime silver alloy Jefferson Nickel struck at the Denver Mint, the 1945-D WDDO-007 exhibits close Class II distorted hub doubling visible on IN GOD WE TRUST. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, this variety is cross-referenced as CONECA 10-O-II and RPM #4, with an additional listing as WRPM-024 on the reverse. The dual attribution as both a doubled die obverse and a repunched mint mark makes this specimen notable for carrying two distinct die anomalies. Obverse die markers include a die scratch to the right of the 5 in the date and a die scratch connecting the E and R of LIBERTY. On the reverse, the die is listed as 1945-D 5c WRPM-024, with a heavy die gouge below the N of UNITED and a die gouge below the F of OF. The wartime silver composition of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese was used from mid-1942 through 1945, and the large D mint mark above Monticello's dome identifies this as a Denver Mint product from the final year of this emergency alloy. Close Class II doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST rewards careful examination under magnification.
