1945-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Designated a Best Of nickel doubled die variety, this 1945 Denver wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel carries WDDO-006 with Class VI distended hub doubling producing very strong extra thickness across virtually every major obverse element: IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, hair and queue details, the profile, and the bust. The comprehensive nature of the doubling, touching nearly every design feature on the obverse, places this among the strongest nickel doubled dies in the wartime series. The obverse die markers include a die crack running northwest through the upper right hair to the rim at approximately 12 o'clock and a die gouge extending from the rim southwest to the upper left of the E in LIBERTY. Adding to the variety's significance, WDDO-006 was paired with two different reverse dies, both of which are themselves repunched mintmarks. Stage A carries WRPM-018/RPM#5 showing D/D West, while Stage B pairs with WRPM-008/RPM#20, also D/D West.
