1945-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-014
Error
Description
Carrying one of the highest DDO numbers in the 1945-D Jefferson nickel census, DDO-014 documents light spread across IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date — an unusually comprehensive set of affected obverse elements. This Denver Mint wartime issue was struck in the emergency 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese alloy, with the large D mintmark positioned above Monticello's dome to distinguish the composition from pre-war cupro-nickel coins. Denver produced approximately 37.1 million silver-alloy nickels in 1945, the final year of the wartime composition. What makes DDO-014 particularly notable is its assignment to multiple VarietyVista die marriage references: UVC-803 paired with DMR-071, and UVC-806 paired with DMR-076, suggesting this obverse die participated in at least two distinct die marriages during its service life. Each pairing documents a different reverse die mated with the same doubled obverse, a common occurrence in high-volume production where worn dies were replaced while their partner die remained in service. The four-element spread pattern provides collectors with multiple diagnostic zones for attribution confirmation.
