Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-0442 with die marker reference DMR-007, this 1944-S Washington Quarter carries light extra thickness on the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY — a spread pattern consistent with a minor hub doubling event that affected the obverse working die. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B in Mid Die State is likewise unconfirmed, and Stage C in Late Die State exhibits a die crack running from the rim into the wing below the last A of AMERICA, providing a useful stage-specific diagnostic. Struck on 90% silver planchets at the San Francisco Mint during World War II. The reverse of this die pair is listed as MMS-003 (Large), meaning it was paired with a reverse die showing a Large S mintmark shift — making this a combination variety linking an obverse doubled die with a reverse misplaced mintmark shift.
