Description

Combining a doubled die obverse with a repunched mintmark, this 1944-S Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-023 is attributed by the Wexler Team. The obverse displays an extra eyelid below the normal eyelid paired with a large S mint mark. The same die is also cataloged as WRPM-001 (S/S/S East and Serifs), a triple-punched mintmark — making this a dual-attribution variety where DDO and RPM coexist on one die. Obverse markers: N/S scratches through BE of LIBERTY, a scratch from neck to top of bowtie, and a long scratch from the bottom of the bowtie south ending left and below the date. Reverse markers: N/S scratch at lower left inside of N in CENT, diagonal scratch inside the upper N of UNITED, and a small gouge on the left side under the upper arm of T in UNITED. The 1944-S was struck during World War II, and the convergence of a doubled die and triple-repunched mintmark on a single obverse die makes this especially appealing for collectors who value multi-error attribution. N/S die scratches through the BE of LIBERTY. Die scratch running south from the neck to the top of the bowtie. Long die scratch from the bottom of the bowtie running south ending to the left and below the date. Reverse: N/S die scratch at the lower left inside of the N in CENT. Diagonal die scratch is seen inside the upper N of UNITED. A small die gouge on the left side and tucked under the upper arm of the T of UNITED.
